The Future of Wines from Unknown Regions

How many times have you walked into your local wine shop and asked "Hey, do you have any Moroccan wine?" I'm going to guess none.  For those of you who actually had a number, I salute you! There aren't many of us here, in the U.S. at least, that know that Morocco is starting to make some serious noise when it comes to wine. More and more fine dining establishments, local wine bars and shops are starting to pick some up. There are even some great articles that have been released in the last few years highlighting Morocco's wine making history and growth.

Morocco is a country where 98% of the population is forbidden to drink alcohol by religious edict. But really, do you think that in the whole country of Morocco there isn't anyone who drinks? Yes there are those who abide by the laws of Islam, but their neighbor who owns the bar next door doesn't ideally live the same lifestyle. We have a very interesting view of Muslim countries in general after 9/11. The fact is, not all are alike and some have leaders that want to help build their economy with the production of wine. Did you know that Morocco was the first foreign country to recognize the United States of America in 1777?  Morocco is one of our closest allies in the Middle East and North Africa.

How do I know about it? Well, that story goes back about 5 years ago, to the time when I met the man who would become my Husband...
